The local Conservatives in Hammersmith & Fulham, have been instrumental in bringing changes, I have previously been a staunch Labour supporter, even being a member of a trade union, I feel completely let down by a failed policy of crime prevention locally here in my Borough where I live, the national government under David Blunkett when he was Home Secretary set up the Safer Neighbourhood initiative, it was not enough to do this on it’s own, our Conservative local administration has pumped £Ms into propping this up, whilst at the same time decreasing our Council Tax every year since 2006, when they came into power, I wrote the below for our “Crime Summit 2010? set up by our Cabinet Member and Leader in 2007, it speaks volumes about what can be achieved by a Conservative local administration, I for one am looking seriously at what way to vote at the next election, going on what I have experienced locally, also speaks volumes of what we can expect nationally should a Conservative Government be elected.
The “Crime Summit” has been instrumental in dealing with inherent problems associated with our neighbourhoods and community in LBHF. Since 2006 we have seen a major drop in certain criminal activity, our streets are safer, our local businesses and public places are more vibrant, in my part of the borough W12, we have seen major reductions in street crime, especially street drinkers, and beggars, the borough’s investment in our SNTs is a glowing success that has shown interest from outside of LBHF, we have had other LAs visit, one Council Leader came to see how we tackled crime associated with small businesses, and how a partnership approach with local government and the community builds on this success story.
I am very pleased to be able to take part again in our Crime Summit 2010, and look forward to reporting more successes again next year, as last year and previous years since 2006, we should be congratulating all our 16 wards for their collective input into “Community Safety”, especially the successful NHW movement, now showing a phenomenal success in membership, I see all the signs that have gone up around our borough, growing from strength to strength, we should be congratulating our Cabinet Member for Crime and Leader of The Council, for leading the way in this benchmark LA we are privileged to live in – London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, also our Borough Commander Kevin Hurley has shown great leadership – his Teams of officers and staff, working with us as a community to deter crime and associated ASB, especially in areas that had previously blighted the lives of residents, some of them very vulnerable. Well done everyone.
I know we have a long way to go in the North of our Borough to bring it up to a standard of acceptance, I refer to our street market in shepherds bush, there are ongoing issues in a small area of concern, I am hoping this can now have a holistic approach in dealing with concerns of residents and traders, the successes of our SNT in Shepherds Bush needs to backed up with a more methodical approach particularly around drug dealers, and the reoccurrence of a particular problem once dealt with by the LA and MPS. I know we can achieve this; it is a matter of getting the right “Problem Solving “ approach by all concerned.

Images that Create Empathy

When designing the Web Graphics for our website or blog, we need to focus on Images that Create Empathy.

Although there’s nothing better than starting out with a good original picture – say a sharp photo we took with our digital photo camera – we can make our lives easier and especially save a lot of time when working with filter plugins.

While it’s important to first know the basics of our Adobe Photoshop as it allows us to visualize the effect we actually want… and we should work sparcely with effects rather than going overboard with them – it’s great fun to experiment and play – as I did with the sunbird picture I published in my previous post – here’s just one astonishing version where I used a filter plugin :

For some weird reason, however, my Adobe Photoshop CS4 collapses regularly when I am using a new filter plugin I loaded last Friday… and unless I saved my work it’s all gone. Hopefully, there’s a solution.

Sensuality

Sensuality has to do with our five senses – sight, taste, hearing, touch and smell – and our degree of awareness thereof; in other words our perception of Life and anything that happens around us.

Sensuality is what my Online Newspaper  Touch Vision Talk was built on where we constrain ourselves to five main categories, referring to the five senses… plus obviously media-oriented categories like a photo gallery, a featured gallery, an art and presentation gallery and a media gallery for videos.

In the Digital Photo “Taste of Paradise” that I took of an adorable little sunbird on dark blue agapanthus blooming right now in Cape Town’s unique Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens yesterday – and the colors are absolutely untouched while I obviously turned this picture into a bit of Wildlife Art by creating and integrating other elements of my own personal taste – , I may assume that this Picture talks to more than just your visual receptors!

Sensuality in Images

In our previous article under the main topic ‘Web Graphics Design’, we spoke about “Pictures that Talk” and how to design “Images that Create Empathy” … and my simple answer to this is by creating digital pictures and images that appeal to one or more of our senses – and this irrespective of the topic. We can do this by expressing or translating our personal perception, understanding and skill in terms of :

• Taste and Finesse
• Aesthetics
• Humor
• Simplicity or Elaboration
• Accuracy and Photo Realism … or the exact opposite thereof:
• Absolute Freedom of Form and Shape etc…

in the style, technique and ways of our own choice.

As with anything of value, the closer we are connected to what we are doing – really within the process and part thereof – the more sensual the result and the response it triggers.

BEing in the NOW is the secret of it all – and the most important lesson to learn. Touching and being touched… that’s all there is.

Discovering Photoshop

Images that Create Empathy

An important function of Images is to Create Empathy in the viewer, meaning an emotion, a feeling, something that resonates and as such carries our message across and – as a consequence – triggers a reaction.

In Advertising, this reaction is carefully calculated and anticipated.

Images that Create Empathy

Images that Talk blur the lines between us and ‘the other’ – in other words the sender (say the artist) and the receiver (the audience) and they are always images that Create Empathy – Empathy translating basically into feeling and our capability to underestand and share someone else’s emotions.

Heinz Kohut put it like this: “Empathy is the capacity to think and feel oneself into the inner life of another person.”

What counts for us as Web Graphic Designers when it comes to Websites and Blogs is that our Artwork reflects what we want to express at a given moment, for a specific reason… which is mostly articulated in text format. As such Web graphics amd Images are much more than a decorative element of a website; they have a very clear goal: to captivate peoples’ attention and to mobilize a desired reaction.

Google has recognized the increasing importance of Images and gives us many ways to tag them and give our posts an additional boost to reach top level rankings.

Photoshop Borders Ycademy

Tonight’s Ycademy call will deal with creating Borders in Photoshop. After the session about round corners, we will today look at some other types of borders which can be created with just a click of the mouse or two.

We will create elliptic borders, ripples, sunken and raised borders, capsules, buttons and so on. Be there at 7 pm London.

Optimization Website

Website Optimization is the most important – yet almost invisible – part in professional Web Design and Website Development.

If done correctly, it ensures that our websites and blogs perform well on search engines like Google. However, as things are constantly changing, like for instance Google’s algorhythm – there are no guarantees that what worked yesterday will bring the same results as today. Not at all! We better be flexible and accept that we have to bend to a temperamental online scenario; it won’t happen the other way around.
